In order to create the best list possible, all Aesthetic Octopus staffers have been living in solitude within the woods for the past week, sleeping in the snow under the modern world’s dim stars, waking amongst packs of small animals that have become our only interaction with flesh and blood that has the warmth of life. We have cut ourselves off from the “world,” we have cut ourselves off from Stereogum and Pitchfork and Facebook and mothers and girls and boys and MTV and Paul Rudd and each other and we have filled this void with the sounds of tigers roaring, deer laughing, and most importantly, birds singing. We have listened to the birds’ songs and have all noticed they resemble songs we heard throughout the year. Perhaps we are just projecting our favorite songs onto the sounds of the eagles and cerulean warblers (Freedom anyone?) but I’d like to think that is not the case. I would like to think that the best songs of 2010 have been embraced by the birds, and now they are singing chillwave and witch house to attract their mates.
These are the lists of songs the birds sang to us in the woods. If you don’t like them, blame the cerulean warblers. And blame Jonathan Franzen for trying to save them.
We will be posting a few more lists throughout the week, obviously including a best albums list, so LOOK OUT FOR THAT!
